The french-german institution for security and defence (ISL) and Saarland University joined their efforts and developed a method to strengthen the structur of metal foams. Experimental data shows a drastic increase in energy absorption capability. The light and robust material has excellent shockabsorbing qualities. The technology offers a significant improvement in mechanical features of usual metal foams. The effectiveness is based on a metallic coating applying crystalline nanoparticles onto the conventional metal foam. Application ranges are e.g. in the region of crashabsorbers for vehicles or in aerospace engineering.
