Troc Hold: New Self-Retentive Holder for Minimally Invasive Spine Surgery

Neurosurgeons at the University Hospital of the RWTH Aachen have developed a new holder for trocars which are used within microsurgical procedures of the spine, such as microdiscectomies. Several minimal invasive surgical techniques have been investigated for the treatment of herniated discs, and microsurgery using an operation microscope and a percutaneous access has been identified as a very promising one.

While tubular retractor systems have been widely used for microsurgery of the spine in the past, sets of trocars which had originally been developed for endoscopic procedures have been introduced for these procedures recently. The disadvantage of using trocars within percutaneous access operations is that a trocar holder is needed for fixing and positioning the various trocars. An assistant surgeon has to fix the trocar holder manually which might cause problems due to minimal shifting of the trocar. In addition, the physician fixing the holder is limited in assisting the surgeon elsewhere.
