New Method Predicts Sepsis Using Blood Expression Profiles

For the establishment and evaluation of expression profiles generated from the blood of patients with infections, for the first time clinical and genomic data are taken into account, allowing a particularly early diagnosis of septicaemia and/or septic states. An anticipated septic reaction can already be detected 4-7 days prior to the clinical manifestation of the septic state and thus be medi-cated appropriately.

The methodology for the prediction of septic states includes a thorough processing of the blood sample, RNA isolation, and establishment of an expression profile using specific genes which were, after analysis of clinical, laboratory and genomic data, recognised as highly relevant for the prediction of septicaemia.
