Electrospinning Breakthrough: Nano and Mesofibers from Metals

The technically established electrospinning process is used in the invention at hand in order to produce fibers with diameters under 1,000 nm from metals and metal oxides.

A degradable polymer and a metal salt are dissolved in a solvent and electrospun into fibers. After removal of the polymer, metal oxide fibers result. These metal oxide fibers can subsequently be reduced to the corresponding metal fibers.

These metal and metal oxide fibers with diameters in the range of submicrometers are suitable for applications in microelectronics and for special filters. Thus due to their thermal stability, metals are better base materials for high temperature filters than plastics, and it is known that filtration efficiency gets better, the thinner the fibers of the filter are.
