Siemens offers a central data hub for meter data in deregulated energy markets

In the utility markets around the globe the evolution of the energy sector leads to rapid changes because of market liberalization forced by regulation, rollout of smart meters, distributed generation of energy, smart grid initiatives and emerging new technologies. Governments strive to empower consumers, speed up market processes, and create a competitive utility market.

With its EnergyIP Market Transaction Manager (MTM) solution Siemens offers a central data hub for participants of deregulated energy markets. The Market Transaction Manager is designed to manage aggregation, change tracking, and the delivery of meter reads data for the purpose of enabling settlement transactions of a whole market.

With this application, the operator can give market participants access to meter reads data and aggregated usage data, analyze grid loss data, and exception processing by using only one interface. Based on a commercial off the shelf software the Siemens Market Transaction Manager is the one stop blueprint and solution for a risk free introduction of a central data hub.

Centralized data management is adopted especially in unbundled energy markets to enable, support and intensify the business processes of the utility market. In this markets where there are multiple players including Transmission System Owners (TSO), Distribution System Owners (DSO), suppliers, aggregators, third party retailers, generators and prosumers.

These market parties, along with regulatory drivers, can decide to set up centralized data management functionalities or to establish a central entity that handle business processes, meter data flow and data clearing functions. Consumers, market parties and the market itself (competitiveness) benefit from such a centralization of processes or a data hub like the Market Transaction Manager in case a central entity is established.

The key drivers for a central data hub like the Siemens Market Transaction Manager is, that there are equal market entry opportunities for all market parties and the possibility of an easy and fast switching of suppliers. Furthermore the central data hub promotes competition in the energy market and enables cost savings for DSO and other market parties. It enforces only one market model. This makes it easier for market partners to adapt to existing and new services.

The Market Transaction Manager solution is a single integration point for the market entities and his participants. All measurements (production as well as consumption) done by the meter data responsible market parties are delivered to the data hub. The market parties are DSO, TSO, power generation companies, renewable power recources and prosumers.

All measurements done by the participants above are delivered to the data hub like the Market Transaction Manager. It acts as the register for all the electricity meter values down to the local metering point in a whole market. One of the most important functionality of the MTM solution is the imbalance settlement and reconciliation for interval read metering points and profiled (register read) metering points.

The data hub receives and validates the metering data before sending them to the market parties requested those data. In this context Siemens EnergyIP Market Transaction Manager (MTM) solution acts as a system-of-record for metering data for the data hub markets. The solution includes the EnergyIP platform and the Market Transaction Management application. The MTM application is built on the proven, scalable, and multi-tenant EnergyIP big data platform.

The platform ensures reliable receipt, processing, storage and distribution of measurements provided by meter data responsible and other market parties. A missing read and reminder service helps meter data responsible to improve their service levels. Validation and estimation services guarantee that high quality data is available for market exports, reporting, and energy balance processing. The smart grid data model includes technical metering points to support metering concepts for distributed generation, flexible validations and virtual metering points. Last but not least EnergyIP furthermore offers the flexibility to introduce new smart grid services as demand response and virtual power plant solutions.
