ISOAntenna: Novel isolator providing two independent antenna ports for mobile applications

Assuring stability and linearity of amplifiers in transmitters is quite inevitable in modern WLAN or UMTS applications. Presently circuits use large size isolators to ensure linearity and stability in transmitters. The isolator prevents any feedback from one or more irradiative antennas back to the rfsignal driving electronics. How ever this technology shows some disadvantages. One problem is the amount of space an isolator needs. The high manufacturing costs and the fact that isolators can not be realized in every technology are a second draw back. Additionally the high losses of the isolator restrict the operating time of battery driven devices. The Department for Communication Technologies of the University of Applied Sciences Aachen has developed a new technology called ISOAntenna which is a balanced antenna design. Tw o antennas can directly be connected to the driving rf-electronics while a flexible motion for WLAN or UMTS mobile units is strongly enhanced by the use of a multi antenna approach. The invention combines sufficiently high quality performance and inexpensive yet robust antennas capable of establishing high quality w ireless links.
