Ilse media and the University of Amsterdam have launched Gladorsad.com, a website which enables the automatic analysis of facial expressions from pictures to reveal someone’s affective state.

By examining key features in pictures of faces such as regions around cheeks, eye-brows and mouth, computer software has been developed which is able to automatically analyze facial expressions to recognize a person’s emotion.

The following emotions can be distinguished: happy, surprised, sad, angry, disgusted and fearful. The same computer software already decoded Mona Lisa’s smile. The result showed that the painting’s famous subject was 83 percent happy and 9 percent disgusted.

The new website allows visitors to upload their pictures. From the uploaded pictures, the website objectively measures the emotion of that person. After emotion recognition, the photos are included in the photo gallery where the explanations of emotions are presented. The software can also be applied to videos.

The new emotion recognition software can be used in a large number of applications such as Internet (video e-mail, MSN, Avatars, Games e.g. Poker), medical applications (detecting mental diseases), commercials and film industry (assessment of a product or commercial), car industry (attention level of the driver), interviews (Detecting the behavior of persons during an interview) and surveillance.
