International Tinnitus Conference of the Tinnitus Research Initiative in Regensburg

The 11th International Tinnitus Research Initiative Conference will be taking place in Regensburg from March 14-16, 2018 in co-operation with the European Cost TINNET Action.

About 300 international researchers, scientists and clinicians are expected to join this who-is-who of the wide interdisciplinary field of tinnitus research.

“Disruptive Innovations in Tinnitus” is the frame for presentations of the breaking outcomes in tinnitus research of the last years. There will be an industrial exhibition giving the chance to leading companies in hearing and tinnitus to present their latest trends and products.

The conference is internationally renowned in the medical field and provides a good platform to swap information and knowledge, discuss different solutions and allow networking with other researchers.

Before the conference officially starts there is a young academics conference for upcoming tinnitus researchers organized by the “European School for Interdisciplinary Tinnitus Research”(ESIT), a European research project coordinated from Regensburg University.

A great part in the aimed education of 15 PhD students is the early networking and inclusion in the international tinnitus researching community. This new era of researchers shall use the new research practices, do the first genetic studies on tinnitus and create a great pan-european database for tinnitus patients to goal in an individualized and evidence-based tinnitus treatment.

Twelve years after its foundation the Tinnitus Research Initiative Foundation is now back at it roots. The initial goal was founded of leading researchers and scientist on the field of tinnitus aiming to develop effective treatments for the different types of tinnitus.

In Europe about 40 Million people suffer from chronic tinnitus, means the ongoing subjective perception of noise or sound in the ear without an external source of sound.

The tinnitus research has come far in twelve years of TRI action, more researchers and scientist are working on this issue, outcomes and findings in diagnosis and therapy can be shown and a strong international network has been built. Nevertheless a unique cure for tinnitus and its subtypes has not been found yet.

The International Tinnitus Conference is supported – amongst others – by the Regensburger Universitaetsstiftung Hans Vielberth and the Deutsche Forschungsgemeinschaft.

Im Focus: Radar for navigation support from autonomous flying drones

At the ILA Berlin, hall 4, booth 202, Fraunhofer FHR will present two radar sensors for navigation support of drones. The sensors are valuable components in the implementation of autonomous flying drones: they function as obstacle detectors to prevent collisions. Radar sensors also operate reliably in restricted visibility, e.g. in foggy or dusty conditions. Due to their ability to measure distances with high precision, the radar sensors can also be used as altimeters when other sources of information such as barometers or GPS are not available or cannot operate optimally.

Drones play an increasingly important role in the area of logistics and services. Well-known logistic companies place great hope in these compact, aerial...

Im Focus: Scaling silicon quantum photonics technology

The realisation of controllable large quantum devices is key for the development of quantum technologies.

Now a team of researchers from the University of Bristol, Peking University, Technical University of Denmark, ICFO Spain, PAS, University of Copenhagen and Dr....

Im Focus: Optimized Powder Jet Perfects Laser Material Deposition

The Fraunhofer Institute for Laser Technology ILT has developed an inline system for testing, qualifying and adjusting the focused powder jet of the nozzles of laser metal deposition machines. With this system, nozzles can be certified and the caustic characterized completely. The user can also visualize and monitor the process thanks to the camera module with integrated illumination.

Laser Material Deposition has already proven itself in various areas – for example when repairing tools or applying anti-corrosion coatings. But the result...

Im Focus: Novel spectroscopy technique reveals water molecule dance

Scientists at the Max Planck Institute (MPI) for Polymer Research have developed the novel 2D TIRV spectroscopy technique to observe coupling between intramolecular and intermolecular vibrations that make water molecules “dance”.

Liquid water is permeated by a highly dynamic network of strong hydrogen bonds. Motions of molecules in this network underlie fundamental physical and chemical...

Im Focus: Roton quasiparticles observed in quantum gas

An Innsbruck team of experimental physicists, in collaboration with theorists from Innsbruck and Hannover, has for the first time observed so-called roton quasiparticles in a quantum gas. Empirically introduced by Landau to explain the bizarre properties of superfluid liquid Helium, these quasiparticles reflect an "energy softening" in the system as precursor of a crystallization instability. The new work published in Nature Physics demonstrate similar phenomena in the quantum-gas phase thanks to magnetic interactions, paving the way for a novel understanding of paradigmatic states of quantum fluids, such as supersolids.

Discovered in liquid helium about 80 years ago, superfluidity is a counterintuitive phenomenon, in which quantum physics and particle-wave duality manifest at...
