Cost-efficiently modernising heating networks

Experts design scenarios for Duisburg’s heating supply

Based on the characteristic values for 2011, the experts investigated how the network structures could be optimally designed in future and whether a change of energy sources would be useful. They simulated the possible heating supply for the years 2020, 2025, 2030 and 2050.

Above all, connecting the Central/West/South district heating network with the adjacent district heating system proved to be a sensible solution. This would improve the utilisation of industrial waste heat and the primary energy efficiency would increase. The connection between the two networks is currently being checked as part of a planning approval procedure.

In many areas of Duisburg there is a parallel distribution of heat and gas. This is not always sensible and the engineers investigated in which areas the customers should be primarily supplied with gas or district heating. They also defined areas where a parallel supply continues to be appropriate.
