Fraunhofer HHI and Partners Launch First Open-Source 5G FR2 MIMO Demonstrator.

Fraunhofer Heinrich-Hertz-Institut (HHI) and its partners, Allbesmart, National Instruments (NI), and TMYTEK, have unveiled the world’s first open-source 5G FR2 MIMO demonstrator. This cutting-edge test platform for 5G and future 6G technologies features high-bandwidth capabilities at 28 GHz, allowing users to explore advanced technologies such as joint communication and sensing. The use of multiple antennas enhances link stability and maximizes bitrates. The demonstrator was developed as part of the Fraunhofer HHI-coordinated 6G-RIC research hub.

The open-source 5G FR2 MIMO demonstrator significantly improves upon existing test platforms. By transitioning from the previous FR1 to FR2, the demonstrator offers enhanced measurement precision, better sensitivity, and expanded testing capabilities. This advancement will allow researchers to conduct more reliable tests under dynamic, high-intensity conditions—critical for real-world applications like smart transportation, where autonomous vehicles must navigate complex environments with precision. The demonstrator’s high-bandwidth MIMO capabilities further enable the exploration of cutting-edge technologies such as joint communication and sensing.

“By making this technology open-source, we aim to foster collaboration and innovation in next-generation telecom systems,” says Prof. Slawomir Stanczak, head of the Wireless Communications and Networks division at Fraunhofer HHI and coordinator of the 6G-RIC project. “This demonstrator is a crucial step toward realizing 6G and enhancing digital sovereignty by enabling the global research community to explore, experiment, and push forward the future of wireless communication.”

The demonstrator combines the collective expertise of its partners: Allbesmart’s proficiency in OpenAirInterface (OAI) integration, NI’s high-performance software-defined radio (SDR) hardware, TMYTEK’s cutting-edge mmWave solutions, and Fraunhofer HHI’s extensive experience in contributing to global mobile communications standards and developing software for advanced 5G and 6G applications.

The demonstrator is available for use in 5G experiments via the EURECOM open-source GITLAB repository. OpenAirInterface Alliance members will continue testing and expanding the OAI stack and FR2 functionality.
