The Siemens Smart Grid Division is expanding its smart-grid platform EnergyIP with the addition of application software components for the German smart metering market.

With this move, Siemens will provide power supply companies with a central IT solution for the administration of smart-meter gateways and for the processing of encrypted and signed energy consumption measurement data. This solution enables power suppliers to connect smart metering systems consisting of a smart-meter gateway and smart basic meters to their central IT system.

This IT solution fulfils the requirements for data protection and data security stipulated by the German Federal Office of Information Security (BSI) in its Technical Directive for Smart Energy, TR-03109.

“The growing integration of information and communication technology in power supply networks that are being developed into smart grids is increasingly focusing attention on the issue of cyber security. The requirements that must be met in terms of data security – from the beginning to the end of a transmission line, including all products, systems, solutions, and processes – are getting stricter all the time. From our extensive smart grid portfolio, we are providing power suppliers and utilities with the right solutions to meet their needs,” said Jan Mrosik, CEO of the Siemens Smart Grid Division.

Siemens has designed its solution as a multi-client system. This allows the roles of distribution network operator, measurement point operator, and gateway administrator to be implemented in compliance with market rules. The software design already takes into account the expansion of market communication, which is currently being specified by the German Association of Energy and Water Industries (BDEW). This expansion pertains to the exchange of data between all market roles.

The IT solution is based on the proven smart-grid platform EnergyIP from Siemens. New market roles can be flexibly configured in order to ensure the necessary potential for upgrading in the future. The joint and separate data-storage functions can also be configured for the external market participant and gateway administrator roles. The solution works with an SAP-QBS (Qualified Business Solution)-certified MDUS system (meter data unification and synchronization) with standard interfaces that is expanded in conformance with BSI and independently of the meter manufacturer.

The EnergyIP platform concept helps to improve overall costs during installation and operation, resulting in an improvement of cost-efficiency. The current version of the EnergyIP application supports BSI-compliant business processes in establishing secure connections. Other features supported are the configuration of the smart-meter gateways and the basic meters, processing of encrypted and signed measurement data, and monitoring of the smart metering systems.

Siemens relies on established partners for its platform strategy. For example, the security and cryptography modules are sourced from the Atos subsidiary Worldline, one of the leading providers of high-security software solutions. Siemens gave special attention to ensuring the interoperability of its IT solution with smart-meter gateways from different manufacturers. The first interoperability tests with the gateways from Power Plus Communications, one of the leading manufacturers of BSI-compliant smart meter gateways, ran successfully.

Energy-efficient, eco-friendly solutions for setting up intelligent power supply networks (Smart Grids) and the associated service are part of Siemens' Environmental Portfolio. Around 43 percent of its total revenue stems from green products and solutions. That makes Siemens one of the world's leading providers of eco-friendly technology.

The Siemens Infrastructure & Cities Sector (Munich, Germany), with approximately 90,000 employees, focuses on sustainable and intelligent infrastructure technologies. Its offering includes products, systems and solutions for intelligent traffic management, rail-bound transportation, smart grids, power distribution, energy efficient buildings, and safety and security. The Sector comprises the divisions Building Technologies, Low and Medium Voltage, Mobility and Logistics, Rail Systems and Smart Grid.

The Siemens Smart Grid Division (Nuremberg, Germany) offers power providers, network operators, industrial enterprises and cities an end-to-end portfolio with products and solutions to develop intelligent energy networks. Smart Grids enable a bidirectional flow of energy and information. They are required for the integration of more renewable energy sources in the network. In addition, power providers can run their plants more efficiently with data gained from Smart Grids. Software solutions that analyze data from Smart Grids will continuously gain importance. Thereby, the division uses in-house developments in addition to systems from software partners.
