Specific detection of Mycobacterium avium ssp. paratuberculosis (MAP)

Up to now, the detection of Mycobacterium avium ssp. paratuberculosis is very difficult and infections can unfortunately only be confirmed in a very late stage. Consequently, from time to time contaminated food products (e.g. milk) could be released to market which may possibly become a health risk (Morbus Crohn) for humans.
Scientists from the Justus Liebig University Giessen were able to develop a specific and at the same time highly sensitive real-time PCR procedure for the detection of Mycobacterium avium ssp. paratuberculosis. With this molecular biological PCR procedure it is possi-ble to detect even small traces of Mycobacterium avium ssp. paratuberculosis in milk, fecal, organ, or tissue samples and to identify infected animals already at a very early stage.
