Hydrophobic ionic liquids

The invention at hand provides novel, very hydrophobic ionic liquids as well as methods for the production thereof.

These hydrophobic ionic liquids contain

pentafluorophenyl imide ions as anions and
imidazolium ions, imidazolidinium ions, benzimidazolidinium ions, N-organo-pyridinium ions, quaternary ammonium ions, phosphonium ions or guanidinium ions as cations.

The novel pentafluorophenyl imide anions contain a pentafluorophenyl group and another aliphatic or aromatic group which may be entirely or partly fluorinated.
When applied, the purity of ionic liquids is very important. Impurities within ionic liquids may, for instance, negatively influence the characteristics of chemical reactions.
The method according to the present invention avoids such impurities. It allows for the introduction of the anion via a quantitative chemical reaction instead of a mere equilibrium shift during ion exchange.
