Procedure for the Production of Insulin in Stem Cells

For the induction of insulin synthesis, placental stem cells are used since the placenta

possesses several pluripotent cells which can be isolated in large numbers without ethical problems or stress for mother and child. These include primarily chorion cells which are cultivated using a specific procedure and induced for insulin production. Chorion cells are perfectly suitable for transplantations, since they exhibit immunological immaturity in addition to a stem cell-like phenotype, thus leading to a considerably reduced immunological rejection after transplantations as compared to adult cells.
