HerpHu-mAb - Humanized monoclonal anti-HSV antibody

The present invention HerpHu-mAb provides a humanized anti-HSV antibody that is capable of neutralising HSV infections and inhibiting the cell-to-cell spread that is crucial during HSV reactivations. HerpHu-mAb revealed as highly effective in prevention of ocular HSV infections as well as lethal infections under immune-suppressed conditions in the corresponding animal models. Moreover, HerpHu-mAb proved to be capable of overcoming drug resistant HSV infections. Since HerpHu-mAb specifically binds to a highly conserved surface antigen that is essential for the viral fitness, the development of drug resistance is most unlikely. Due to the high infection rates of the population and due to the frequent reactivation of the lifelong persisting virus, HSV is of particular clinical relevance. A passive immunoprophylaxis is currently not available. A couple of experimental vaccines for active immunization against HSV1 and HSV2 showed no verifiable success. HerpHu-mAb represents a new alternative for the treatment and prevention of HSV infections that is capable of overcoming drug resistances to conventional therapies.
