New epigenetic DNA methylation system: Generation of non-transgenic plants with modified phenotype
This novel DNA methylation system allows the targeted generation of economic plants with a requested phenotype by gene silencing. What is special is that the requested phenotypic characteristics are being transferred to the plant’s descendant, whereas the transgene does not remain in the formerly transformed plant. This is achieved by so called RNA-directed DNA methylation (RdDM) which allows modifying the methylation pattern of genomic sequence sections specifically.
