Device and system for the ventilation of the middle ear

The present invention therefore provides a suitable apparatus for reliable ventilation of the middle ear. The device consists of an annular element of biocompatible polymer or metal. Furthermore axially formed folds are distributed across the periphery, they extend from one end to the other end of the element. The invention can be inserted easily and outpatient in the Eustachian tube and is guaranteed to hold this tube open. This results in a stable, passive and continuous ventilation of the tympanic cavity. Also a pocket flap consisting of two uneven parts is located in the interior of the tubular member providing mechanical closure of the Eustachian tube. As a result, the middle ear is protected from liquids and foods. At a certain pressure difference, the pocket flap opens and causes the desired pressure equalization.

Furthermore, a system for ventilating the middle ear is presented; it consists of the said device and a second valve. At the most basic this second valve is a hollow cylinder which is arranged in the mastoid bone and consists of biocompatible materials. Thus, a second possibility for the ventilation of the middle ear is provided.
