SALSA – Analytics asks for a dance

The Excellence Initiative of the Government and the Federal States sponsors outstanding research in the field of universities and research institutions. Graduate schools are part of the Excellence Initiative and their objective is to support the new scientific generation in the best possible way and promote their early-stage independence.

What is contained in the items we use in our everyday life? How much and which softener is contained in our children’s plastic toys and do they pose a hazard to our health? Are the ingredients of a foodstuff the same as stated on the package, and how much fine dust is in the air? All these are questions analytical chemistry may have an answer for. Without analytical science, a number of our everyday life’s findings would not be possible, and our standard of life would be considerably lower. But analytical science is not the only fundamental for many scientific and engineering problem solutions in our everyday life, it also stands for innovations in fields such as nanotechnology or materials science. And above all, it interacts with the many layers and disciplines of science.

„We would like to contribute to the renewal of analytical sciences with our graduate school ‘SALSA’. We can achieve that by an interdisciplinary approach in teaching and research, new curricula and teaching materials and intensified collaboration among scientists of analytical and physical chemistry, biology, physics, statistics, modelling and didactics“, says Janina Kneipp.

SALSA will be part of „Analytic City Adlershof“. It is supposed to bundle university, non-university and industrial expertise in analytical-chemical issues available at the Adlershof site.
