Libraries for quality requirements in discrete manufacturing

Siemens Industry Automation Division has expanded its MES (Manufacturing Execution Systems) offer, Simatic IT, by a set of libraries for fulfilling quality requirements in discrete manufacturing industry.
Visual inspection and non-conformance are now managed by predefined procedures easy to use and install in several types of industry. Additionally error proofing is integrated by complete electronic work instructions that help operators throughout the entire manufacturing cycle with the capability of dynamically supporting optional parts, directly at the plant level.

The regulatory compliance in discrete manufacturing industry is continuously growing. The ability to provide products with the right quality and managing high volumes at high speed is one important focus. The number of orders handled per day and the number of items of BoMs (Bill of Materials) is higher of some orders of magnitude, compared to the typical items of process industry.

The new set of libraries for Simatic IT now provides an efficient access to the required quantity structures and real time capabilities in discrete manufacturing. The new offer provides the acquisition of machinery data and their association to individual products and orders and is an important function for quality management, safety and recall campaigns.

For the first time, physicists at the University of Basel have succeeded in measuring the magnetic properties of atomically thin van der Waals materials on the nanoscale. Im Focus: Energy-saving new LED phosphor

The human eye is particularly sensitive to green, but less sensitive to blue and red. Chemists led by Hubert Huppertz at the University of Innsbruck have now developed a new red phosphor whose light is well perceived by the eye. This increases the light yield of white LEDs by around one sixth, which can significantly improve the energy efficiency of lighting systems.

Light emitting diodes or LEDs are only able to produce light of a certain colour. However, white light can be created using different colour mixing processes.

Researchers led by Francesca Ferlaino from the University of Innsbruck and the Austrian Academy of Sciences report in Physical Review X on the observation of supersolid behavior in dipolar quantum gases of erbium and dysprosium.
