Main drives for belt-driven and coupled machine tool spindles

The motors are characterized by their excellent dynamic response, smooth running properties and low vibration levels. They therefore add greater precision to the machine tool spindles, thus helping to increase productivity.

Siemens is showcasing its new 1PH8 range of motors for belt-driven and coupled machine tool spindles at the EMO 2009 machine tool fair. The motors have been designed as main drives and are available as asynchronous and synchronous versions. The 1PH8 motors feature excellent dynamic response, smooth running properties and low vibration levels. This means that machine tool spindles can be operated with greater precision, improving workpiece quality and productivity as well.

Compared to the previous 1PH7, 1PH4, 1PM6 and 1PM4 versions, the power output range has been increased. The motors are available as main drives with power outputs ranging from 2.8 kW to 1,340 kW. Different bearing designs extend the range of possible applications. The motors have been perfectly matched to the Sinamics S120 drive system, simplifying commissioning and enhancing the control response. For applications requiring a high degree of compactness, the synchronous version of 1PH8 motors can also be used.

There are motors available with a solid or hollow shaft, different cooling methods such as water cooling, forced ventilation or, in future, self-cooling , plus absolute-value and incremental encoders. Thanks to the extremely large power range, the high speed range of up to 20,000 r.p.m. and the modular design principle, the motors are suitable as standard drives for conventional machine tool spindles.
