Hannover Messe 2013: RZD wants Siemens locomotives

They are to be developed and produced by Ural Locomotives, a joint venture of Sinara and Siemens, for use in feeder services, and built in the Ural Locomotives plant in Yekaterinburg, Russia.

Delivery to RZD is planned to be completed by 2020. It is also intended that Ural Locomotives will be responsible for the entire maintenance and servicing of the locomotives. The corresponding contract is scheduled to be concluded next year.

The memorandum of understanding was signed by Peter Löscher, President and CEO of Siemens AG, Vladimir Yakunin, President of RZD, and Dmitri Pumpyansky, President of the Sinara Group.

At the signing ceremony, Jochen Eickholt, CEO of Siemens Rail Systems, said, “The agreement reached today is more than a sign of the very close partnership between RZD and Siemens Rail Systems. With our Ural Locomotives joint venture and the plant in Yekaterinburg, we are ideally positioned to provide RZD with reliable, modern trains and locomotives.”

RZD had previously signed a memorandum of understanding at the end of 2012 concerning the planned order of 675 type 2ES10 locomotives, also known as the “Granit”, which are also to be built in the Ural Locomotives plant in Yekaterinburg.
