Fraunhofer-Institut Offene Kommunikationssysteme

The Fraunhofer Institute for Open Communication Systems FOKUS researches and develops advanced technologies for the information society based on the vision of a user-oriented, continually accessible computer and communications environment. This concept takes into account the diversity and individuality of each user, his interests, attitudes and skills, as well as place, time and the facilities locally available. Further consideration is given to basic conditions governing where, when and what information is selected, and opportunities for the user to participate in the communications environment. To this end, the Fraunhofer FOKUS is developing a »seamless« communications infrastructure which offers global, environment-specific services at varying quality levels.

The Institute closely follows the chain of development, from the initial idea to project prototypes and testing of concept products in test beds, through to marketing in the form of spin-offs. Fraunhofer FOKUS innovations are currently being marketed in five spin-offs.

International cooperative endeavors and strategic partnerships with industry, research and government bodies help to ensure success. FOKUS employees actively participate in national and international standardization agencies and industrial consortiums.

The FOKUS Competence Centers offer a multitude of services, including testing, expert analysis, case studies, consulting, training and further develop-ment.
