BITKOM - A Brief Overview
The information, communications and media industry is becoming a key sector in the economy. The efficiency of the telecommunications infrastructure, the media competence of school leavers, digitalisation of business processes and the application of E-government systems are decisive for Germany ’s international competitiveness.
ICT products and services are in use everywhere, from the domestic PC workstation, through entire production and service sectors, to the public service. These are universal technologies, the nervous system of the mobile, communications-based knowledge society. The general economic importance of the German ICT industry is increasing continually, even if the ICT sector does not remain unaffected by a general economic downturn.
With a domestic turn-over of 136 billion Euro it is one of the largest sectors of the economy overall. With some 800,000 workers, the information and communications sector is one of the largest employers in Germany.
The industry needs a strong lobby. BITKOM represents 1,300 companies, some 700 of which are direct members. These include almost all of the leading players in the industry, as well as more than 550 smaller, medium-sized and new businesses. BITKOM members have a combined turnover of more than 120 billion Euro and employ around 700,000 men and women.
In this respect, BITKOM is the industry ’s number one representative association, also by European comparisons. To promote the companies in the information, communications and media industry, to make their views heard in politics and the press, and to advance Germany ’s progress towards the information society -these are BITKOM ’s main goals. In addition, the Association offers a broad range of practical sources of assistance, of direct benefit to every BITKOM member on a daily basis:
An annual programme of more than 400 free forum meetings and working groups on all topics of relevance
Bundesverband Informationswirtschaft, Telekommunikation und neue Medien e. V.
