ifak - Institut für Automation und Kommunikation e.V. Magdeburg

The "Institut für Automation und Kommunikation" is a non-profit institute for applied research which is particularly committed to the introduction of current information and communication technologies in automation technology. The legal representative is the registered association "Institut für Automation und Kommunikation e.V." Magdeburg which was founded in November 1991. ifak originates from the Faculty of Electrical Engineering and Information Technology at the Otto-von-Guericke University Magdeburg and in October 1992 the institute started its business. ifak follows the principals of the Fraunhofer-Gesellschaft and is administered by the BFJM Wirtschaftsprüfungsgesellschaft Solingen. A contract of co-operation with the Otto-von-Guericke University Magdeburg and the status as an Associated Institute of this university ensure a close co-operation as well as the inclusion of students and academic teachers in research and development activities at ifak.

The "Institut für Automation und Kommunikation" deals with long-term and product-oriented applied research and development. The long-term research enables the setting up and securing of know-how and expertise for a relatively broad scientific profile. This expertise is used in research on demand for the industry and for public institutes. Users of the results are principally small and medium sized enterprises (SME) as well as public authorities in the process of decision making for real automation projects. The transfer of results takes place mainly through order-oriented research for companies, city councils and authorities as well as through licensing. The Institute is closely connected to various companies in the region of Saxony Anhalt by way of a co-operation contract. However it also has numerous national and international relations to companies, authorities and organisations. ifak is a sought after and recognised partner in national and international expertise committees. The industry highly regards ifak´s loyalty to its aims and deadlines, its reputable project work and commitment by the staff at ifak.

Since May 1994, ifak is located in the newly-built Innovation and Founder Centre Magdeburg (IGZ) on the northern outskirts of Magdeburg in the Technology Park Ostfalen Barleben. With modern equipment ifak is able to carry out successful research work within an area of approximately 1800m².

The ifak-network

Through earlier research co-operations with companies, a growing demand for products and services was recognised. However since the Institute is of a non-profit character, it was unable to fulfil these demands. Therefore an extensive company concept for an ifak-network was worked out. In the summer of 1997, the company ifak system GmbH was founded, which although independent, is based on a close co-operation agreement with the institute. They ensure a direct and active technology transfer from basic research to industrial application. ifak system GmbH started its business on 1st October 1997. The legal representative of the institute, the registered association "Institut für Automation und Kommunikation e.V. Magdeburg", acts as an associate for ifak system GmbH.
