For the fourth time, laser polishing will be the center of attention at the Fraunhofer Institute for Laser Technology ILT in Aachen on September 16 and 17, 2020. As a premiere, however, since the “4th Conference on Laser Polishing – LaP 2020” will take place virtually for the first time. On both days, due to the large number of international participants, the conference will start at 1:30 p.m. and end at 4:30 p.m. (both CET).
In 2014, Fraunhofer ILT hosted the first “Conference on Laser Polishing – LaP” to exchange research results in an international setting. Since then, the...23.07.2020 | Read more

In response to the COVID-19 pandemic, mobile software applications have been developed worldwide. Such apps are part of a wider array of digital tools for the prevention and control of infectious diseases. Which technical questions occur in the development of these apps? What ethical aspects must be considered? How can these apps be helpful in the relaxation of restrictions on public and economic life?
International experts will discuss these issues at an English-language virtual panel discussion organised by the German National Academy of Sciences Leopoldina...07.07.2020 | Read more

The Dresden Nexus Conference (DNC2020) will take place from 3 to 5 June. In view of the current Coronavirus pandemic, the conference will be offered entirely virtually and free of charge. The international conference will focus on the question of how a circular economy can contribute to a sustainable society and what role the Nexus Approach, i.e. the integrated management of natural resources, can play in this. Jointly organised by the United Nations University (UNU-FLORES), the Technische Universität Dresden (TU Dresden), and the Leibniz Institute of Ecological Urban and Regional Development (IOER), registration for the virtual DNC2020 is now open.
Under the theme “Circular Economy in a Sustainable Society”, the third Dresden Nexus Conference (DNC2020) in June will be devoted to important issues of...19.05.2020 | Read more
The 30th Aachen Machine Tool Colloquium will take place on June 10 and 11, 2021, at the Eurogress Aachen. Due to the developments concerning the spread of the corona virus (SARS-CoV-2), the AWK has been postponed from 2020 to 2021 with regard to the safety and health of participants, customers and employees and will therefore not take place in the usual three-year cycle.
With the upcoming year and the effects caused by the corona virus, which are already affecting many manufacturing companies and will have a long-term impact on...07.04.2020 | Read more
Due to the corona crisis, the International Coral Reef Symposium (ICRS) will not be held this summer. The new conference dates are July 18 to 23, 2021. The University of Bremen explained that the dynamic spreading of the virus, the protection of all participants, and the travel restrictions were the factors that led to this decision. The accompanying public events, which were planned to take place in the town, are to also take place one year later, if possible. The silver lining of this situation could be that the conference will now be part of the university’s 50th birthday celebrations in 2021.
“This decision was a difficult one to make for our partners and our team but it was necessary,” says Professor Christian Wild from the University of Bremen....06.04.2020 | Read more
Owing to the progressing coronavirus pandemic, the Fraunhofer Institute for Laser Technology ILT has decided to cancel the International Laser Technology Congress AKL in 2020. The safety and health of our attendees, partners and employees has top priority for us. The next AKL will take place from May 4 to 6, 2022, thus maintaining its regular biennial rhythm.
However, so that interested parties do not have to wait another two years for the live demonstrations in Europe's largest laser system park, which are firmly...02.04.2020 | Read more

On March 25, the “International Conference on Learning Analytics & Knowledge 2020” (LAK20) will be hold as a complete online format. The conference, joined by attendees across the world, is organised from Frankfurt am Main. Responding rapidly to the spread of the Coronavirus, the team of organisers has rescheduled and completely switched to a virtual conference. The event is the worldwide most significant forum for this discipline in digital education. Learning Analytics reflects the measurement and analysis of data from technology-based learning processes that are, for instance, gained in online courses or software tutorials. Learning is thus meant to be supported and optimized.
“Especially at an international level, Learning Analytics has been shown to have a relevant impact on education“, says Professor Dr. Hendrik Drachsler from...23.03.2020 | Read more

An international research team with Prof. Cornelia Denz from the Institute of Applied Physics at the University of Münster develop for the first time light fields using caustics that do not change during propagation. With the new method, the physicists cleverly exploit light structures that can be seen in rainbows or when light is transmitted through drinking glasses.
Modern applications as high resolution microsopy or micro- or nanoscale material processing require customized laser beams that do not change during...
