At Chillventa, DuPont will be presenting a range of new low-GWP refrigerants from the Opteon® family that can be used in commercial refrigeration (medium- and low-temperature range), air conditioning applications and heat pumps with direct expansion, and chillers.

At Chillventa 2012 from October 9 to 11 in Nuremberg/Germany, DuPont Refrigerants (Hall 4, Booth 410) will be showcasing new refrigerant solutions that will significantly reduce the environmental impact of refrigeration and air conditioning equipment.

The new range of DuPont™ Opteon® refrigerant products currently under development have a much lower GWP (Global Warming Potential) impact than historically used refrigerants. Besides Opteon® XP10, which has already been under development for commercial refrigeration applications (medium-temperature range), new products will be featured for potential use in air conditioning equipment and heat pumps. In addition, DuPont will provide information on the ISCEON® 9-series product portfolio, a family of products commercially available today and designed specifically to enable easy conversion of existing R-22 refrigeration and air conditioning equipment, allowing end users to continue to utilise their existing equipment for the remainder of its useful life.

In four presentations, experts from the company will give insights into the current development status of low-GWP technologies in various applications as well as highlight the dangers of counterfeit refrigerants. Details of the time and venue for these presentations can be obtained by inquiring at the exhibition booth or consulting the official programme of events.

DuPont™ Opteon® family of low-GWP refrigerants expanding
A special feature of the new DuPont™ Opteon® family of low-GWP refrigerants is their optimal balance of properties including efficient performance, reduced environmental impact, high safety in use, and low total operating costs. The range is based on specially developed HFO technology.

DuPont introduced Opteon® XP10 as its leading low GWP refrigerant under development at Chillventa 2010. This product is designed as an alternative to R134a in commercial refrigeration applications (medium-temperature range). Its GWP value of approximately 600 is considerably below that of R134a (GWP: 1430) but it has similar thermodynamic properties and is non-flammable. It is therefore suitable both for new equipment and for existing equipment operating with R134a technology.

DuPont is also developing and testing a series of other refrigerants that can be used in commercial refrigeration applications for the replacement of R404A/R507, air conditioning applications and heat pumps for the replacement of R410A, and chillers for the replacement of R134a and R123. At Chillventa, the company will introduce a new HFO molecule under development named DR-2. This development product is suitable for use in high-temperature heat pumps, the organic rankine cycle process, chillers operating with low-pressure technology, and as a heat transfer fluid.

DuPont™ ISCEON® 9-series – leading global solution for efficient replacement of R-22
The DuPont™ ISCEON® 9-series has now become the leading global solution for cost-effective and efficient transition out of R-22 in existing equipment. It is a family of non-ozone-depleting retrofit refrigerants, which enables continued use of existing refrigeration and air conditioning equipment without the need for costly investment in replacement equipment or extensive modification measures.

According to EU Regulation EC1005/2009, only reclaimed or recycled HCFCs may be used for maintenance or servicing of air conditioning and refrigeration equipment up to the end of 2014. Then, from January 1, 2015, there will be a complete ban on the use of these substances.

Joachim Gerstel, Market Development Manager EMEA, DuPont Refrigerants, commented: “The amount of recycled R-22 is already limited today. Since dealers and distributors expect a further shortage due to steadily decreasing returned quantities of R-22, we advise rapid conversion to avoid shutdown of equipment and the costs associated with this. The work required for conversion can generally be carried out as part of routine maintenance and servicing during normal business operation. DuPont is committed to assuring that ISCEON® 9-series refrigerants will be widely available in sufficient quantities.”

DuPont has been active in the refrigerants sector for more than 80 years and is one of the market leaders and innovation drivers. As such, the company responds quickly to political and industry initiatives and develops suitable solutions that can help further reduce the environmental impact of air conditioning and refrigeration equipment.

Siemens scientists have developed new kinds of ceramics in which they can embed transformers.

The new development allows power supply transformers to be reduced to one fifth of their current size so that the normally separate switched-mode power supply units of light-emitting diodes can be integrated into the module's heat sink.

The new technology was developed in cooperation with industrial and research partners who ...
