Siemens showcases extensions to TIA Portal and the Simotics motor family

In advancing its automation and drives portfolio, Siemens is placing the emphasis on IT integration, stated Ralf-Michael Franke, CEO of the Drive Technologies Division: “Productivity gains for our customers in plant engineering and operation today are achieved essentially as a result of IT-based interlinking between control and drive components. Simotics motors play a significant role in integrated drive train applications and form a part of our TIA portfolio, allowing customers from all industries to efficiently combine the Simotics family with our automation and service technologies.”

Having completed a major reorganization process on 1 October 2011, the Siemens Industry Sector is now all set to concentrate on addressing the requirements of its industrial customers worldwide. The strategic focus lies on further advancing expertise in the vertical industries, technology-based services and industrial software. “IT penetration in industry will continue to grow. In view of our customers' growing product and plant complexity, IT-based support of engineering processes is, and remains, the most important productivity lever”, stated Eckard Eberle, head of the Industrial Automation System Business Unit. Against this backdrop it is important to perceive IT security in industry not as a product characteristic which customers can buy off the shelf, but rather as an ongoing process which is defined in consultation with the plant operator and needs to be constantly reviewed. “As a leading automation provider we take industrial security very seriously and make every effort to enhance the security of our products even further while also increasing customer IT security awareness”, explains Eberle.

Eberle presented the latest extension of the TIA Portal engineering framework as a technical innovation in the Siemens automation portfolio. This latest release helps to accelerate the engineering of fail-safe applications using the new Step 7 Safety Advanced engineering tool, providing all the necessary project engineering and programming elements and offering newcomers a quick and intuitive entry into the world of programming. Innovations also include a new generation of devices for the distributed I/O Simatic ET200SP and new industrial communication products such as the Scalance X-500 industrial Ethernet switches. These are particularly suited for structuring large automation networks and facilitating their integration into the corporate IT system. Another innovation is the package of coordinated wireless communication components for industrial use which complies with the WLAN (Wireless LAN) standard IEEE 802.11n. The package includes access points, client module and a high-performance IWLAN controller with a data rate of up to 450 megabit/s.

In the field of drive technologies, the Siemens Drive Technologies Division has merged its extensive electric motor ranges with the “Simotics” product family, enabling users to find the right motor for each application in the manufacturing and process industries and/or in the energy sector. The Simotics family includes low-voltage motors for mains and converter operation, motors for motion control applications, as well as DC and high-voltage motors. For an integrated drive train to operate efficiently, all components need to interact perfectly and be optimally tuned to the specific application involved. The core element providing a direct interface with motion control is the motor. “The integral Simotics range designed to match all other drive components helps to reduce the complexity of choosing the right motor saving our customers costs and valuable time”, explains Ralf-Michael Franke. At SPS/IPC/Drives, Siemens launches the first product innovation to bear the new name: the Simotics T 1FW6 torque motor. It boasts high dynamic response and high positioning accuracy and will be available in a range of new compact sizes suiting applications with limited space availability.
