Siemens at the Achema 2012: focus on plant life cycle management

At the fair, Siemens is showcasing its comprehensive range of process and analytical instruments, drive technology, process control, manufacturing execution systems and plant engineering for the entire product and plant life cycle – from research and development through process analysis and design, plant engineering and production, to maintenance, optimization and modernization. The company is also presenting its extensive range of services for the chemical and pharmaceutical industries – from technical support and maintenance through life cycle service agreements to consulting services on industrial safety and security, and energy management.

The Siemens exhibition program and the innovations at the Achema are oriented toward the individual phases in the product and plant life cycle.

For research and development, Siemens is presenting an integrated clean room solution with access control, fire protection and evacuation, as well as specific solutions for laboratories, such as pure and ultra-pure water, and the automation of typical laboratory applications.

In the field of process analysis and design, Siemens is showing the potential of continuous production in the pharmaceutical industry. In comparison to batch production, companies can expect to achieve cost savings ranging up to twenty percent. There are innovations in the new PAT(Process Analytical Technology) Sipat version 4 software, which original equipment manufacturers (OEM) can easily integrate into their process control solution.

The new Comos 10 software release has a significantly expanded range of functions, which can manage the largest volumes of data for plant management, from engineering through to production. The integration of process engineering and automation has also been developed further. A new interface ensures a consistent, bidirectional exchange of information between Comos and the Simatic PCS 7 process control system.

The main theme in production and maintenance is version 8 of the Simatic PCS 7 process control system, which has a multitude of new functions. Innovations range from an improved data exchange and a simplified engineering workflow through more powerful communication, redundancy and high-availability functions to new controllers and expanded functionalities in the software tools.

The Siemens portfolio for the chemical industry is distinguished by high performance, plant availability and process stability, which are achieved by redundancy, secure fieldbus communication, and control and maintenance concepts. The company is also exhibiting recipe sequence controllers with the Simatic PCS 7 add-on APF (Advanced Process Function) for flexible mixing processes.

In pharmaceuticals, Siemens is presenting a modular, flexible solution based on Simatic PCS 7 for fermenters, which conforms with the ISA S88 standard. The Engineering Framework TIA Portal is used throughout drug manufacturing, from the definition and planning of recipes through to the control of production and filling lines. The presentation for the pharmaceutical industry is augmented by a serialization solution which enables companies in the industry to meet future legal requirements and achieve greater transparency in their supply chain.

The company is showing its complete range of process analysis and instrument products, and the latest developments for pharmaceuticals and chemicals. Two topics dominate drive technology: there are energy-efficient drive solutions for pumps, fans and compressors, and Loher motors and drives for hazardous areas and extreme environmental conditions. The Siemens fair presentation is rounded off in production and maintenance by remote services, which show companies the opportunities and benefits of remote controlled automation systems.

For optimization and modernization, Siemens focuses on engineering, consulting and other services, and shows ways of increasing efficiency, such as resource optimization, simulation and modern plant control centers. With the MAV(Main Automation Vendor) concepts and Simatic PCS 7 lifecycle service agreements, the company presents additional solutions for higher plant availability, protection of investments, and reduced total cost of ownership (TCO) throughout the entire life cycle.
