More performance and functionality for Sinumerik 828 controllers

  • Updated software version 4.7 and new PPU 2xx.3
  • Control of up to two machining channels and up to ten axes/spindles plus two auxiliary axes
  • Powerful hardware and software now enable the compact computerized numerical control to be used with grinding machines

Siemens has expanded the functional scope of its Sinumerik 828 family of controllers with new hardware and software. The compact CNC controllers are now equipped with the new software version 4.7 and the powerful PPU 2xx.3.

One of the benefits of the new Sinumerik 828D Advanced is the ability to control up to ten axes/spindles as well as two auxiliary axes. In addition, the most powerful Sinumerik 828 offers a second machining channel for simultaneous machining with two tools. The update also increases the range of applications of the Sinumerik 828 controllers: Now they can be used for grinding machines as well as turning machines and milling machines.

The further development of the compact Sinumerik 828 controllers offers users above all higher productivity and improved performance of their machine tools. Sinumerik 828D Advanced is capable of controlling milling machines with up to eight interpolating axes or spindlesand two additional auxiliary axes for the control of tool chains, pallet changers, chip conveyors or other peripheral devices.

Users can also use a second machining channel to execute two different NC programs simultaneously in their turning and rotary grinding machines, or they can synchronize the programs with each other extremely simply using ProgramSync. In this way, two workpieces can be machined at the same time in one machine, for example for simultaneous rear face machining in the counterspindle.

Two tools can also be in action simultaneously on the same workpiece in order to rough at double the cutting rate, or to rough and finish at the same time for processes such as balance cutting. This increases the throughput of workpieces per machine while also maintaining a high level of machining accuracy.

With the new software version 4.7, the G-Tech software is available to Sinumerik 828 controllers for grinding applications. It supports machine manufacturers in designing compact grinding machines with up to ten axes and two machining channels. In addition, the Sinumerik 828 offers grinding machine manufacturers functionalities such as grinding cycles and tailor-made tool management.

Siemens has also made the creation of parts programs on the Sinumerik 828 more efficient and faster. One such improvement is the ability to transfer contour elements directly from a DXF file via contour detection into the programming of workpiece machining. A host of different documents and file formats can be called up directly on the screen of the Sinumerik for support. In addition, the colored marking of syntax elements – known as syntax highlighting – simplifies programming and helps the operator to work more effectively and without errors.

Sinumerik 828 V4.7 also offers comprehensive protection of cycle know-how, which prevents unauthorized access to sequences preprogrammed in the factory. Custom-made user interfaces can use new programming elements, such as dialog windows to indicate progress and concealed password entry, which make the implementation especially user-friendly. The CNC Lock option offers manufacturers protection when supplying machines on an instalment basis. After activation of the option, the machine initially runs for a limited time only, and can then be commissioned fully via a code following full payment by the user.
