Meso- and nanotubes with different layers have been used for some time for the production of hollow fibres and non-wovens. These non-wovens and the hollow fibres are suitable as separation media as well as for storage and are used in microelectronics, optics and catalyst technology. Up to now, the coated tubes had to be produced in several complex steps. In addition, they often took arbitrary orientations in non-wovens, thus their employment as separation media or for storage was limited. The new procedure is based on the conventional electrospinning technique. It permits the production of non-wovens consisting of hollow fibres with predefined inner and outer diameters, which are marked by a high degree of orientation. The inner and outer surfaces of the hollow fibres can be composed of several layers of different materials. In this way, polymers, metals, metallic oxides, glasses and glass ceramics can be combined in any order. Even non-wovens free of polymers can be manufactured.
