A novel human TNF-responsible neutral phingomyelinase enzyme (nSMase3) has been identified. Furthermore, the invention relates to the use of nSMase3 as pharmaceutical and diagnostic target and to appropriate test systems. The human enzyme was identified by screening database sequences with up to now unknow n function w ith a short sequence derived from a bovine neutral sphingomyelinase. The identified nSMase3 shows no significant homologies to the well-know n human neutral sphingomyelinases type 1 and type 2.
