TEE probe holder with locking mechanism for intraoperative use

The transesophageal echocardiography (TEE) provides a clear image of the heart's valves and chambers

without interference from the ribs or lungs. The TEE probe is an approximately one meter long flexible instrument with an ultrasound transducer at the tip, which is inserted into the patient via the esophagus. For intraoperative use e.g. during cardiac surgery, the TEE probe usually stays in place for the whole operative period, typically for two to five hours. The holder keeps the TEE handle with the controls in the intended position, while the transducer is inserted in the esophagus. This allows monitoring of the cardiac performance without having to hold the probe manually. The probe can be repositioned with one hand and adjusted to achieve the desired view. Furthermore, the holder reduces considerably the potential for damage to the expensive TEE ultrasonic probes that can occur during intra-operative use, because the holder prevents the probe from falling on the floor.
