The technology provides a flexible and reusable
surface enhanced Raman scattering (SERS) substrate.
For this purpose sub-surface-silver nanoparticles are
embedded in a glassy matrix. Until now main
problems of SERS active substances are oxidation
effects that are irrelevant for this new technology.
Therefore, soda-lime silicate glass was doped with
nanoparticles using thermal ion-exchange techniques. Afterwards, the nucleation
and growth of the metal nanoparticles were activated and controlled by exposure to
a hydrogen atmosphere followed by annealing.

Novel highly efficient and brilliant gamma-ray source: Based on model calculations, physicists of the Max PIanck Institute for Nuclear Physics in Heidelberg propose a novel method for an efficient high-brilliance gamma-ray source. A giant collimated gamma-ray pulse is generated from the interaction of a dense ultra-relativistic electron beam with a thin solid conductor.
