Electrochemical method for the production of metal or metalloid particles in the nanometer range

Metal and metalloid particles, which have a size in the nanometer range, are used, for instance, for the production of medical instruments, micro- and nanoelectronic devices and catalysts.

Previous processes for the manufacturing of these particles can only be carried out discontinuously. Furthermore, the particles are deposited onto substrates or are tightly bound to these substrates, respectively.

In contrast, the invention on hand can be carried out continuously as well and provides free particles consisting of metals or metalloids, wherein the particle diameters are adjustable within a range of several micrometers up to nanometers.

In the process according to the invention at hand, a precursor substance is dissolved in an ionic liquid and either reduced by free electrons in a plasma phase, or the precursor substance reacts with particles of the plasma phase. Thereby, precursor substances are salts of the metal or metalloids from which particles with diameters in the nanometer range will be produced.
