P5-PARK: A new target for parkinsonism based on a type 5 P-type ATPase

Scientists at the University of Cologne, Germany, have linked successfully a trans-membrane ATPase to the hereditary parkinsonism Kufor Rakeb syndrome PARK9. Loss of function mutations of P5-PARK were deemed to be causative for this autosomal recessive form of early-onset parkinsonism with pyramidal degeneration and dementia.

Analysis of P5-PARK sequence and/or expression will provide tools for diagnosis and therapy of hereditary neurodegenerative diseases like parkinsonism and dementia.
