Scientists at the Westphalian Wilhelms University of Muenster invented an elegant LiDFOB manufacturing process based on LiBF4 (Lithiumtetrafluoroborate) and LiBOB (Bisoxalatoborate lithium) as starting materials. In contrast to the industrial synthesis route utilizing silicon tetrachloride, the novel synthesis yields LiDFOB with no chloride impurities are obtained. In addition, the handling of the reactants as trifluoroborate etherate or silicon tetrachloride is inconvenient or dangerous. Commercial Opportunities: Lithium-ion batteries are widely used as mobile energy storage, with LiDFOB being an often used electrolyte.
