alcanoic acids (PHB) from substrates which are potentially
ecotoxic. The inventive method for the continuous production of PHB is characterised in that strains of micro-organisms which are known to form PHB are bred chemostatically with maximum heat production on substrates which present growth inhibition with a substrate surplus.
The advantages are, compared to other methods, that the invention represents a relatively cost-efficient way of microbial synthesis of polyhydroxyalcanoic acids. Waste products from chemical industries and agricultulture may be used for synthesis of PHB (utilizing phenol or benzoate as alternative carbon-sources). Thus, enabling simultaneous synthesis of useful materials as well as disposal of hazardous substances. The maximum heat produced is adjusted according to a
maximum proportion of PHB contained in the biomass.
