High-throughput fatty acid composition analysis of plasma phosphoglycerides

Cardiovascular diseases, cancers, immune diseases and mental development of children are related to the fatty acid composition of circulating lipids and membranes, which is reflected in the fatty acid composition of plasma

phosphoglycerides. These are easily accessible via blood sampling. Thus, a precise and cost-effective method for the determination of the fatty acid composition of phosphoglycerides in blood plasma is highly desirable, as this is a valuable biomarker in epidemiology, nutritional and physiological studies, and in clinical routine.
In contrast to existing methods, the phosphoglycerides can be analyzed in a homogeneous process and all steps are performed in solution. This unique feature enables high-throughput analysis and significantly reduces analysis costs.
Clinical and epidemiological studies would clearly benefit from this novel high-throughput analysis method. Currently, it is routinely applied to monitor patients suffering from metabolic diseases and reimbursed by health insurances. This novel technology can be used in large diagnostic laboratories to significantly reduce cost and time of phosphoglyceride analysis. Alternatively, it could be integrated in a standardized analysis kit.
The technology is well established and routinely used to analyze blood plasma samples. It could easily be implemented in diagnostic laboratories.
