BondWeld – Friction Stir Welding with Adhesive Fixation

The Friction Stir Welding process joins metal sheets or sections with the introduction of friction heat in a relatively cold state. This process is primarily used in the joining of aluminium sheets. The advantage of Friction Stir Welding lies in the low introduction of heat in combination with little distortion and a good weld structure. Very thin metal sheets or foils can also be joined using the novel process without any warping or build-up of material next to the weld. Until now the use of Friction Stir Welding has been limited to few applications because of the expensive clamping technology required.

With the BondWeld process complex clamping technol-ogy becomes unnecessary because of the advantageous combination of Friction Stir Welding and adhesion technology. The adhesive used not only serves for bonding, but also seals the gap between the metal sheets to be joined. Use of the BondWeld process also renders expensive special tools unnecessary in the case of small batch sizes and prototypes.
