A topological approach to cultural dynamics

Information sharing events get underway as academics look into the connections and patterns relating to cultural dynamics across disciplines.

The first in a series of four colloquia recently took place in Amsterdam, Holland. The event marked the start of a project known as ‘A Topological Approach to Cultural Dynamics’ (ATACD) which/that brings together researchers from Goldsmiths, University of London with other international experts.

The project is exploring the potential of topology to provide a set of tools and concepts to think about different levels and kinds of cultural change – learning, transmission, and innovation. The approach is especially useful at the present time of rapid cultural change as it provides a distinctive perspective on the questions of cultural predictability and innovation. It looks at cultural change as normal, relational and intensive.

This recent colloquium had a specific focus on the tools and metaphors of topological analysis, with researchers sharing approaches across disciplines. A planned programme of residencies will enable a more sustained exchange, and provide an opportunity to explore the effects of working in different environments.

Co-organiser Professor Celia Lury from Goldsmiths, said: “The event was a success. We began to share ideas and methods across disciplines and to explore different uses and understandings of topology.”

The next colloquium will be held in Rotterdam, 17 – 18 April 2008
