How do Media and Cultural Change Outside of Europe?

International Workshop on the change of media and culture at the University of Bremen

On September 28, 2012 the DFG Priority Program „Mediatized Worlds“ together with ZeMKI, the Centre for Media, Communication and Information Research of the University of Bremen organize a workshop focusing cultural changes through the digitalization and convergence of media from a non-European perspective.

Under the title „Media and Cultural Change Outside of Europe“ internationally renowed researchers come together to discuss research results and to learn from each other. Invited are contributors from the US, China, India, Japan, Mexico and Egypt as well as from Denmark, Switzerland and Germany.

Starting point of the workshop is the fact that the social life of people and culture we live in change through the current change of media. But what does culture mean from the perspective of North America, North Africa or Asia? And which role do media play in these processes of cultural change we can observe today? How can these changes theoretically grasp and grounded in empirical studies? These are some of the questions that will be raised and discussed in the workshop together with the invited researchers.

The workshop is organized by the DFG Priority Program „Mediatized Worlds“ which is coordinated by Prof. Dr. Friedrich Krotz at the ZeMKI, the Centre for Media, Communication and Information Research of the University of Bremen. The program started in October 2010 and it is based on the theory that the media communication amalgamates more and more with the everyday actions of the people. In this way different mediatized worlds will develop. Everyday life and social relationships as well as work and consumption but also public and policy are part of these worlds. Against this background twelve individual projects examine how these mediatized worlds emerge and which social changes we will have to expect.

The Workshop “Media and Cultural Change Outside of Europe” takes place on September 28, 2012 at the University of Bremen in the building "Cartesium" (Enrique-Schmidt-Straße 5, 28359 Bremen). After consultation with the organizers Journalists can participate in the workshop.
