About 366 million people worldwide are suffering from diabetes. The diabetes rate in the UAE is among the highest in the world with currently 19.2%. The Emirate of Abu Dhabi alone is spending more than AED 1 billion per year to treat diabetes and diseases connected with it.

Diabetes treatment programs have started worldwide and focus on prevention and personalized, evidence-based treatment, utilizing clinical practice guidelines and innovative technologies in diabetes care. Germany has strong expertise in the field of diabetes treatment and flagship projects like the Personalized Diabetes Management System of the Institute of Applied Diabetes Research Karlsburg (KADIS) are internationally groundbreaking.

The “German – Arab Workshop to Combat Diabetes – Experiences and Telematic Innovations” aims to inform healthcare professionals from the UAE and Gulf region about best practices from Germany and is designed to be an interactive exchange among local and international healthcare experts to show solutions for the effective treatment of a growing number of diabetes patients.
After the workshop you are cordially invited to join us for a networking reception in the foyer.

The seminar will cover the following topics:
• Worldwide Epidemic of Diabetes Mellitus: Challenge for Healthcare Authorities
• The Challenge of Diabetes Mellitus in Arabic Countries
• Cardiac and Vascular Complications of Chronic Type 2 Diabetes Mellitus
• New Approaches to Treatment and Perspectives for Type 2 Diabetes Mellitus
• Type 2 Diabetes Mellitus in Children and Adolescents: Epidemic and Prospects

In the focus: Ceramic Transformer Integrates Power Supply Unit

Siemens scientists have developed new kinds of ceramics in which they can embed transformers.

The new development allows power supply transformers to be reduced to one fifth of their current size so that the normally separate switched-mode power supply units of light-emitting diodes can be integrated into the module's heat sink.

The new technology was developed in cooperation with industrial and research partners who ...

In the focus: New quantum dot technique combines best of optical and electron microscopy

It's not reruns of "The Jetsons", but researchers working at the National Institute of Standards and Technology (NIST) have developed a new microscopy technique that uses a process similar to how an old tube television produces a picture—cathodoluminescence—to image nanoscale features.

Combining the best features of optical and scanning electron microscopy, the fast, versatile, and high-resolution technique allows scientists to view surface and subsurface features potentially as small as 10 nanometers in size.

The new microscopy technique, described in the journal AIP Advances,* uses a beam of electrons to excite a specially ...
