Cutting edge UK e-research showcased at major international HPC conference

The UK’s e-science programme will be showcased through a selection of presentations and demonstrations from a wide range of application areas at SC07 in Reno, Nevada. Over 6000 delegates are expected to attend SC07 and there will be over 300 academic and commercial exhibitors.

Funded by the Science and Technology Facilities Council (STFC) and the Engineering and Physical Sciences Research Council (EPSRC) and hosted by the UK National Grid Service (NGS), the United Kingdom Pavilion will feature continuous demonstrations of cutting edge applications of HPC and Grid Computing. The auditorium in the centre of the Pavilion will highlight particular projects from the UK e-science programme and allow for in-depth audience questions and discussion.

Projects to be demonstrated at the United Kingdom Pavilion include:

•AstroGrid which has created and deployed the UK's Virtual Observatory (VO) representing the world’s only unified and deployed VO operational service. This gives astronomers a 'one-stop' access to all the worlds’ astronomy data from their desktop, significantly speeding their rate of research.

•National Centre for Text Mining (NaCTeM) who are investigating solutions to the data deluge problem. With an overwhelming amount of knowledge recorded in texts, there is a need for techniques to discover new, hidden or unsuspected knowledge using High Performance Computing (HPC).

•GridPP who will be demonstrating the Real Time Monitor which shows the world’s largest scientific grid, as it happens. Computing jobs in disciplines from biomedicine to particle physics fly to hundreds of sites worldwide and can be followed from your desktop in real time.
