Incontinence is common among men. A new study shows that a forth of men between the ages of 40 - 80 suffers from different symptoms of incontinence. Despite the symptoms and worse quality of life, and the fact that there are help to find, few men seek help for incontinence.

Gabriella Engström, at the department of Caring and Public Health Sciences at Mälardalens University, defends her thesis "Lower Urinary Tract Symptoms in Swedish male population: prevalence, distress and quality of life" on the 8th of September. The thesis is based on a questionnaire answered by all men at the ages 40-80 in Surahammar. The result shows that a forth of the med suffers from some kind of incontinence and that very few seek help. This is despite distress and a worse quality of life caused by incontinence.

Knowledge of these men's experiences of the symptoms and in what way the symptoms effects their quality of life is crucial for which treatment that should be offered. Gabriella Engström's thesis hopes to increase the understanding of this.

The public defence of the thesis takes place on Friday the 8th of September in the assembly hall, entrance 21, Central Hospital of Västerås, 13.15.
