AANS and the City of Boston Host World Meeting

Thousands of neurosurgeons from around the globe will convene in Boston, Massachusetts, from August 23 to 28, 2009. The American Association of Neurological Surgeons (AANS) and the city of Boston have been selected by the World Federation of Neurosurgical Societies to host the XIV International Congress in 2009.

The AANS and the Greater Boston Convention and Visitors Bureau already have initiated coordination of this remarkable meeting that will attract more than 5,400 attendees. Bookings of 2,500 hotel rooms in 10 hotels will account for a large portion of the $8-10 million in total revenue the meeting is expected to generate for the city of Boston.

“The AANS and city of Boston are amply prepared to welcome neurosurgeons from around the world to this spectacular event,” said AANS Executive Director Thomas A. Marshall. “In 1932, neurosurgeons gathered in Boston to formally establish the Harvey Cushing Society, a society known today as the American Association of Neurological Surgeons. Not only is Boston rich in neurosurgical history, but it is a dynamic host city for this world-renowned meeting.”

With over 6,600 members worldwide, the AANS is one of the oldest and largest neurosurgical professional organizations in the world. For more than 70 years, the AANS has been dedicated to advancing the specialty of neurosurgery. The AANS, with its long history of providing quality educational meetings, will complement Boston, a city rich in U.S. history.

“Boston will offer our attendees its multitude of attractions that highlight the arts, music and theater, as well as restaurants that cater to all ethnicities,” said Mr. Marshall. “Travel to and from Boston for this meeting will be convenient and has the accommodations to satisfy any of our meeting delegate’s desires.”

The AANS is dedicated to advancing the specialty of neurological surgery in order to provide the highest quality of neurosurgical care to patients. All active members of the AANS are certified by the American Board of Neurological Surgery, the Royal College of Physicians and Surgeons (Neurosurgery) of Canada or the Mexican Council of Neurological Surgery, AC. Neurological surgery is the medical specialty concerned with the prevention, diagnosis, treatment and rehabilitation of disorders that affect the entire nervous system including the spinal column, spinal cord, brain and peripheral nerves.
