High-speed cutting for medical engineering

At this year's Euromold trade fair in Frankfurt/Main, Germany, the Drive Technologies Division of Siemens is exhibiting CNC solutions for all aspects of tool and mold making. The presentation focuses on the entire process chain of high-speed cutting and on solutions for the manufacture of medical implants and prostheses.

Meticulous machining and perfect surfaces are the primary prerequisites placed on the process chain involved in the machining of medical implants and prostheses.

The extremely precise method of machining required here is based on an integrated, powerful CNC solution that encompasses CAD/CAM data generation, simple programming, setting-up at the CNC controller, matching probes, up to highly-accurate cutting with innovative tools. Siemens, together with its partner companies, DMG, Iscar and Renishaw, is showing solutions for high-speed cutting in medical engineering at Booth H36 in Hall 8.

High-speed cutting is a technically sophisticated cutting method. The CNC machines for such milling tasks feature high spindle speeds and much faster feed rates. These are the preconditions for the manufacture of high-quality medical products such as dental and bone implants, bone screws or hip prostheses. The Siemens Drive Technologies Division is demonstrating a variety of CNC solutions at Euromold, from CAD/CAM data generation with NX CAM to the system platform for high-speed cutting, the Sinumerik 840D sl controller with the Sinamics S120 drive system and powerful motors.

The Sinumerik 840D sl is the basis for complex milling tasks. The hardware and the software can be scaled separately from each other. With Sinumerik Safety Integrated, highly effective protection of both personnel and machinery can be implemented. The interplay of diverse functions enables the Sinumerik to flexibly adapt to changing requirements in CNC manufacturing. These functions include the simple measurement or calibration of multiple-axis kinematics as well as tool orientation. The jerk limitation and pre-control functions as well as the perfected look-ahead function support the operator in the set up and operation of machinery for tool and mold making.

The Euromold presence simultaneously marks the start of a roadshow of the Siemens Motion Control Systems and Siemens PLM Business Units together with the partner companies. DMG, Iscar and Renishaw will be giving live demonstrations illustrating innovative solutions for the manufacture of prostheses and implants with the help of HSC along the entire process chain.
