Operating “Green” Power Plants More Efficiently

The solution consists of a software platform through which participating companies can work together efficiently and confidentially.

That includes investors, planning agencies, component manufacturers, maintenance firms, and service providers for plant management or power trading. The platform connects everyone so that each partner has access to the information it needs.

This makes it possible to more quickly establish maintenance windows, or better plan electricity sales, for instance. Siemens is the leader and coordinator of the research project EUMONIS, in which this software and system platform was realized with partners. After a presentation at CeBIT, the solution will also be shown at the Hannover Trade Fair.

Unlike in large-scale power plants, operators of small power stations can’t keep their own resources on hand for every possible task. Instead, the opera-tors hire service providers and coordinate their activities. In the case of maintenance, for example, service engineers are hired as needed based on monitoring data from component manufacturers.

Depending on the plant, the best time for maintenance work might depend on the weather, or it might be a particular time of day. Service providers for electricity sales are then informed of any planned downtimes, and investors adjust their earnings forecasts accordingly.

That is already a complex affair, but for operating companies that manage biogas installations, wind farms and solar parks at the same time, or oversee plants from different manufacturers, the process is even more involved.

The new software platform makes things easier. The maintenance company has access to data on the system requiring maintenance, including monitoring data. It plans its service trips and stores the expected downtimes as information for power traders and investors. The platform also provides data that is needed for future audits, for example. That saves time and reduces operating costs.

Researchers from Siemens Corporate Technology developed the software architectures for the platform. Together with their colleagues from Siemens Industry, they also devised individual components, such as for data security or communication. One important requirement of the platform is confidentiality.

these relationships define who has access to what information and when. For that reason, only certain data is saved on the platform.

Other information is held by the companies involved and conveyed only to authorized partners. For this selective exchange of distributed data, the project developed DIN specifications as the basis for future standards.

Furthermore, the platform is designed in such a way that new partners can be included at any time, and companies already involved can be approved for new responsibilities or relieved of others.
