The Chemical Industries Association (CIA) today applauded the Environment Agency on their draft Chemical Sector Plan. The Plan – to be viewed as work in progress - aims to improve environmental management and performance within the chemical industry and its immediate supply chain. It goes beyond what is currently achieved through regulation, recognizing the significant contribution made by voluntary initiatives.

Ten environmental Indicators of Performance have been selected to monitor the improvements. These not only take account of the CIA’s own Goals for a sustainable environment but also set some challenges in the area of product stewardship. A report on how CIA member companies have collectively performed on reaching their Goals will be published on Thursday 17th November.

Steve Elliott, Director Business Environment, said: “It’s encouraging to know that the Environment Agency’s Sector Plan is focusing on key environmental outcomes and best use of resources in addressing those outcomes – an approach that very much responds to the government’s current Better Regulation initiative.

“We will continue to work with the Agency in developing and implementing the Plan to help secure the ultimate goal of a better environment for all.”
