Siemens Industry Automation Division is expanding its portfolio of Industrial Ethernet switches with Scalance XM-400. The new product line comprises two basic devices for connecting up to 16 (Scalance XM416-4C) or eight (Scalance XM408-8C) network stations, such as controllers from the Simatic range.
Both devices are equipped with electrical RJ45 ports and optical SFP slots which are designed for bandwidths of 1 Gbps. Siemens also offers port extenders, which can be connected without the need for tools, that extend the basic devices with additional connections for up to 24 network stations.
This means that users are able to configure switches to suit all applications, which reduces the costs per port as well as the space requirements. An optional key plug also activates Layer 3 functionality which supports static and dynamic routing and enables the storage of configuration data.
Scalance XM-400 is used to structure Industrial Ethernet networks and to connect automation components via networks in plants in the manufacturing and process industries. Typical sectors include the automotive industry, pharmaceuticals, chemicals, logistics, building management and transport.
The Scalance XM416-4C basic device for up to 16 network stations is equipped with 16 electrical RJ45 ports and four SFP slots for the use of optical plug-in transceivers. This therefore provides four so-called combo ports that can be used either electrically or optically. Scalance XM408-8C offers eight combo ports for up to eight network stations, that is eight RJ45 ports and eight SFP slots. Port extenders that can also be connected in just a few steps during operation (hot-swappable) are available in a variant with eight SFP slots and a variant with eight electrical RJ45 connections. If SFP single-mode transceivers are used, distances of up to 200 km can be bridged.
For fast and convenient network diagnostics of the switches using a web browser (Web Based Management), the IP address of the respective device can be read out locally by means of NFC (Near Field Communication). Scalance XM-400 features various redundancy functions, such as RSTP (Rapid Spanning Tree Protocol), MSTP (Multiple Spanning Tree Protocol) and ring redundancy, and supports the standby function for passive network sections when two HRP rings are coupled in a redundant configuration. The switches can also be used to operate virtual networks, so-called VLANs (Virtual Local Area Networks).
As power supply unit, Siemens offers the PM1507 load power supply for Scalance XM-400 which supplies the basic device and port extender with 24 V DC. Thanks to their compact construction in Simatic S7-1500 format, the new switches can be attached seamlessly to this Siemens controller on the standard rail.
