More investments in energy efficiency

The Institute for Energy Efficiency in Production (EEP) of the University of Stuttgart published the 2nd energy efficiency index in the framework of the energy summit in the Stuttgart Porsche Museum on 1st July 2014, with participation from around 150 decision-makers from business and politics.

This shows a positive trend: the significance of energy efficiency in the companies continues to increase, also compared to the last survey six months ago. 46 % of the company see the significance as relatively large.

Prof. Thomas Bauernhansl, Head of the EEP, assessed the development at the energy summit: “Even if we still have a great deal of work ahead of us in terms of energy efficient production, we can nevertheless recognise that the trend in all areas of the index is positive. After all for 38 % of the company energy efficiency is a concrete reason for investments and not only a side effect of new procurements. This is a good sign.“

The EPP of the University of Stuttgart publishes the energy efficiency index every half year. Whilst the first survey last winter recorded a trend for too few investments in energy efficiency and for fewer ambitious savings targets, a clear positive development can be recognised in the second survey.

If the share of the companies that made less than 5% of their investments in energy efficient technologies was 63%, it is now only 50% in the summer of 2014. The share of the questioned companies wishing to save over 10 % of their energy is currently 20 %. This corresponds to an increase of 16 % compared to the first survey. A similar picture results from the savings targets of the companies: if only nearly 79% of the companies wanted to save less than 5% of their energy in winter 2013, this value has now declined to 64.8%. In return the share of companies wishing to save over 10% rose from 4.5 to 18.5%.

The efficiency summit Stuttgart 2014 was opened with a video message from Rainer Baake, representing Economy and Energy Minister Sigmar Gabriel. He described the position and the approach of the Federal Government in terms of energy efficiency in production and the significance for the turnaround in energy policy. “Above all Minister Gabriel would like to underline the significance the topic of energy efficiency has, since without increasing energy efficiency there will be no turnaround in energy policy“, according to the State Secretary. “The Federal Government first and foremost wishes to move companies to do more for increasingly efficient dealings with energy by giving them incentives.“

“The topic of energy efficiency in production now finally has to be massively promoted“, underlined the founders of the EEP Institute, Heinz Dürr and Karl Schlecht. “The massive development of efficiency technologies challenges German engineering skills and has a high employment potential. And: it helps the environment since the cleanest energy is still the one that doesn’t have to be produced at all“, according to the Chairman of the EEP Advisory Board, Heinz Dürr.
